WHO WE ARE
Safety, Teamwork, Professionalism, Accountability, and Integrity.
Our core values are always at the center of everything we do.
We started with one machine, one operator, and the belief that civil work should be done right the first time. More than two decades later, that belief still drives how we work.
Today, Spriggs Excavation supports heavy civil projects across the Mountain West and beyond, serving renewable energy developers, utilities, commercial builders, and homeowners. Our experience ranges from local excavation to large-scale civil projects, including single-project scopes involving millions of cubic yards of earthwork.
Every job runs on what we call The Spriggs Way: Safety, Teamwork, Professionalism, Accountability, and Integrity. We support that standard with modern technology, proven systems, and experienced crews who know what it takes to plan the work, solve problems, and execute safely.
We are still family-focused, still based in Durango, and still proud to build lasting relationships through People, Partnerships, and Performance.

OUR STORY
Spriggs Excavation, Inc. was founded in 2005 as a small residential excavation company in Durango, Colorado.
Spriggs Excavation began in Durango with a simple belief: do the work right, take care of people, and build something that lasts.
What started small has grown into a heavy civil company trusted with complex work across multiple markets. But growth has never changed the heart of who we are. We are still grounded in hard work, family values, long-standing relationships, and pride in a job well done.
Our story is not just about equipment, projects, or places on a map. It is about the people who built this company, the crews who carry it forward, and the standard we continue to hold ourselves to every day.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Spriggs Excavation Apprenticeship Program
Spriggs Excavation launched its Apprenticeship Program in 2023 with three determined individuals ready to build careers as heavy equipment operators. What began as uncharted territory for our company — training newcomers, seasoned employees, and those entirely new to heavy civil construction — quickly became one of the most meaningful expressions of who we are. From the start, this program has reflected our core commitment to people, partnership, and performance.
Through early growing pains and a deliberate search for the right leadership, we built something that has genuinely changed the lives of everyone involved.
Our program is built on NCCER's nationally accredited curriculum, delivered through Pearson's learning platform. This partnership ensures our apprentices receive instruction that meets the highest standards in the industry — up to 460 hours of related technical instruction and classroom learning, combined with more than 6,000 hours of hands-on experience working alongside journeymen who specialize in the equipment they operate. Our apprentices aren't just learning a trade; they're learning from some of the best in the business.
Today, our apprentices are deployed on large-scale heavy civil projects across the country — including 1,500-acre solar farms, electrical substations, and battery energy storage system (BESS) yards. In just three years, our registered apprentice count has grown more than fourfold, and the program continues to expand. Apprentices develop mastery on bulldozers, motor graders, excavators, and a wide range of additional equipment — skills that define the Spriggs way of doing things and secure the future of our workforce.
With safety as our number one core value, the next generation of heavy equipment operators at Spriggs is built to succeed — for years to come.
