Substation & BESS Projects

Spriggs Excavation, Inc. constructed a new power station pad for a first-time client. The scope included building the pad to subgrade, over-excavating transformer areas, constructing interior access roads, installing RCP with manholes, and developing a trickle channel, forebay, and construction entrances. Spriggs installed over 500 linear feet of RCP and three manholes as part of the stormwater infrastructure. The successful execution of this project reflects Spriggs' commitment to quality and its focus on building strong, lasting partnerships with new clients.

Spriggs Excavation, Inc. constructed Blattner Energy's first standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) yard north of Phoenix. The project required over-excavation to a depth of six feet below subgrade, with all excavated material crushed on-site and reused to construct a stable working pad. Spriggs operated two crushers, processing approximately 92,000 cubic yards of material. All work was self-performed, with dedicated over-excavation, crushing, and backfill crews operating concurrently. The team maintained productivity through extreme heat conditions, with temperatures consistently reaching 115 degrees. Spriggs is scheduled to return in 2026 to complete improvements to Old Carefree Highway.

Spriggs Excavation, Inc. successfully completed the Confidential Substation project while working throughout winter conditions. The scope included a 16-foot cut-and-fill operation to level the 9.5-acre site, followed by construction of a large swale drainage feature feeding into an underground ADS StormTech system. Despite challenging weather, the team delivered the project efficiently and on schedule, demonstrating resilience and expertise in cold-weather substation construction.

Spriggs Excavation, Inc. expanded a substation for Xcel Energy in December 2024. The scope included demolishing existing fencing and structures, stripping topsoil, performing cut-and-fill operations, excavating a detention pond and coordinating concrete pours for a stormwater trickle channel. The project entailed moving more than 12,000 cubic yards of dirt on-site and exporting over 30,000 cubic yards off-site. Spriggs delivered all civil scopes, including a new perimeter fence, expanded the site entrance for safe truck access along a busy highway and integrated daily with live substation operations around underground and overhead utilities.
